Can there or should there -be a Kosher Jesus? The Debate
Segment 1
JewishIsrael.com is an Israeli organization which takes a critical look at Israel’s alliances with fundamentalist and messianic Christian groups and sects. Ellen Horowitz, their Content and Research Director, joins Eve to discuss the 'Kosher Jesus' furor and the issue of Christian involvement with this country. Is Boteach on the right track with his outreach or do we need to be wary of those with an evangelical agenda?
Penina Taylor is an expert in missionary activity towards Jews, having been involved in that world for 17 years herself. An author, speaker, seminary and yeshiva lecturer, and Executive Director of Shomrei Emet Institute and Torah Life Strategies, Penina regularly answers questions from Jews and non-Jews alike on Jewish/Christian Polemics, Israel and its relationship with Evangelical Christianity. One of her reactions to the 'Kosher Jesus' book is to ask why Boteach felt the need to make Jesus more palatable to Jews so that he'll serve as an interfaith bridge; it's not even clear that the Christian's Jesus is
the same person mentioned in Jewish sources. Does he even have to be a part of the dialogue and rapprochement?
2 erudite and knowledgeable women. It's a complex situation and this hour gives much food for thought.
Segment 2
Batnadiv HaKarmi Weinberg is an oil and pastel painter, sculptor and writer who spent her formative years in the Old City of Jerusalem, where she still resides. This charming and bright woman was raised in a very Orthodox milieu and has stepped 'out of the box' to pursue her talents, with family emotional support and while successfully maintaining her standards of Judaism. An interesting balance and a
very talented artist.
Her latest showing is "Inscapes: Works in Pastel” showing at the ICCC, Emek Refaim 12, Jerusalem.
The exhibition will be up until January 30th, 2012.

Rabbi Shmuely Boteach on his new Book "Kosher Jesus"
Rabbi Shmuely Boteach is a well known author, TV personality and expert at bridge building who firmly believes that all issues should be aired, especially the difficult ones, in order to repair relationships. His new book, Kosher Jesus, is a provocatively titled attempt to do just that with Jews and Christians. He delves into sources both Talmudic and historical to show that Jesus was one of many political rebels murdered by the Romans and that it was his followers who created what we now know as Christianity. In the process the horribly cruel Roman behavior was whitewashed and the Jews were wrongfully blamed for killing 'G-d", a canard that led to 2 millennia of persecution, forced conversions and death. Neither Jews nor Christians will find this an easy read, but in order to move forward Boteach feels that the truth must be told so that common ground can be found and misunderstandings and old wounds healed for the future. Both groups are searching for truth in a chaotic world; this book may help provide some answers for some questions, yet undoubtedly raise others. And the journey continues. From Gefen Publishing. Plus, the week that was; thoughts from underground in the Galilee.

Itamar Marcus and Elie Deutsch on their new projects
The Underground Museum in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem is where we learn about the giants that helped to create the State and paid a heavy price.
Itamar Marcus is director of Palestinian Media Watch. Their just released book,Deception, analyzes the rhetoric and official public statements of Israel's 'peace partners' over the past year. Just as PMW has documented since their inception in the mid-90's, there is no education towards peace among the Palestinian Arabs and their leadership, instead there is enormous incitement and justification of violence and jihad. The Oslo generation is as vituperative and hate filled towards Jews as Nazi Germany, if you can believe it. This must-read is making its way to decision makers in the West and hopefully in Hebrew soon as well. Itamar and PMW continue to point at the elephant in the room and those of us who really want peace and co-existence, not just the illusion of both, need to be dealing with reality and not fantasy. Deception does just that. www.palwatch.org
Music can be used to express virtually every emotion. Israeli son, soldier, student, husband and father Elie Deutsch has released an album called Yedid Nefesh with songs inspired by his own life. The Second Lebanon War was a major turning point for him when his songs were used at the time to raise money for northern families affected by the war. The Expulsion from Gush Katif, the death of his grandfather and his marriage also provided him this talented guitarist with ideas and emotions that he has translated into song. While others raise their kids to hate, Israelis do it differently. The Chanuka message of light versus darkness still apply. deutsch.elie@gmail.com

Those in Deed, and those in Need
The Underground Museum in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem is where we learn about the giants that helped to create the State and paid a heavy price.
Yerucham 'Gerry" Katz was born in Kfar Etzion in 1947, lost his father in the War of Independence and returned home to rebuild his kibbutz after the liberation of Yehuda and Shomron in 1967. This former refugee shares his thoughts with Eve on the Jewish presence in the Land of Israel as we approach 64 years since the evacuationand battle that saved his life and a Jewish Jerusalem, but left widows and orphans for whom nothing was ever the same again.
Sulam, the special education center in Israel, was established for children who need intervention but require a religious Jewish atmosphere. Aviva Spetter is in charge of the autistic and delayed development educational track. She explains the different frameworks, the goals and successes of Sulam, the mainstreaming, the programs that work in conjunction with government ministries and the unbelievable devotion of the staff to the kids and their parents. Their co-conference this week with other organizations who work in the same sphere drew 2000 people. The need is vast, the professionalism on a very high level, and one cannot help but be impressed with their accomplishments. www.sulamisrael.org Hot line (anonymous) Hebrew, English, Yiddish 1599 5005 0440.

Terrorism Survivor Speak Out About Beit Shemesh Attack
The Dead Sea and the Little Machtesh, a day enjoying the nature of the Land of Israel. And then, a day with Israeli and German journalists in Gush Etzion. What a week.
To Build and be Built- in both a physical and a spiritual way- is the goal of Livnot U Lehibanot, the 30 year old organization whose home is, where else, but the Holy City of Tzfat. Aharon Botzer, who founded Livnot with his wife Miriam, is proud of what they have accomplished but always looking to future goals and ways to contribute to Israeli society and strengthening Jewish identity. Recent government recognition of the importance of their work in Tzfat has resulted in a grant to help repair their 16th century property and turn it into a visitor's center reflecting that time period. The Kahal, as it will be called, is an exciting new project in line with the Tikkun Olam spirit of Livnot. www.livnot.com
Exactly a year ago 'even' terror wracked Israelis were shocked by the brutality of the forest attack that ended with the death of Kristine Luken. Her friend and tour guide, Kay Wilson, survived the evil rampage and due to her bravery the Palestinian Arab killers were found and brought to justice, putting an end to their rape and murder spree. Kay joins Eve to speak of her ongoing recovery, faith, and her newly published memoirs of what she calls "that terrible, yet very sacred day." A Hasidic proverb- "Fear only two, G-d and the man who has no fear of G-d." She lives both. kay@globaljusticegroup.org

Two deep thinkers and their analyses of Biblical texts
'Journey to Heaven, Exploring Jewish Views of the Afterlife' is the newest book by professor Dr. Leila Leah Bronner. She demonstrates how generations of Jews have grappled with belief in resurrection, immortality, judgement, messianism and the World to Come. Bronner is an unusual combination; a religious woman who is a brilliant academic scholar, a Professor of Bible and Jewish History so incredibly well versed in Bible, and also deeply rooted in Kabbalistic thought from her childhood home. Apocrypha and other extant books are also discussed in this comprehensive survey. Fascinating and very accessible. Urim publications.
Rabbi Mois Navon explores the portion of the week using Freud and other resources to help shed new light on the ancient text. This week's explanation of Jacob's Ladder as reflecting both the ambition and fear of the father of the twelves tribes is very compelling. www.divreinavon.com for his collection of essays on a variety of topics.

Michael Horesh is an independent business consultant who credits- among other things- conservative fiscal behavior and ingenuity for Israel's relative financial stability. As the PIGS in Europe struggle, how and why will Israel fly?
'Israel Inside' is a new film, narrated by popular former Harvard psych professor Dr. Tal Ben Shachar, that delves into the reasons for Israel's unique strengths and ability to turn adversity into advantage. Strong family ties, the idea of tikkun olam, the 'actualizers', even old fashioned chutzpa all figure in the whole being much more than the sum of our parts. Producer and editor Wayne Kopping and writer Rebecca Shore join Eve to talk about their roles in the project. Premiers November 29th on WPBT Florida, and then the world.

Saving an Child's Heart; Hearing the Biblical Poetic Beat
Segment 1
When some US congressmen and their wives finally make it to Israel's heartland it's a privilege to be a part of their journey of discovery. Eve was there.
Save A Child’s Heart (SACH) volunteer doctors from Israel are the subject of the new children’s book, 'Sabrina the Girl with a Hole in her Heart', a story about a 10-year-old African girl with a severe cardiac problem that doctors in her country can’t treat. Wendy Lewis lectures about Israel from an apolitical perspective and her beautifully illustrated and educational book, whose focus is the Israeli humanitarian aid offered to sick children irrespective of country, race or religion, is a literally heartwarming look at how Jewish Israeli doctors do 'tikkun olam', repairing the world, one heart at a time. www.wendylewisbooks.com
Segment 2
Yakov Azriel combines his love of Tanach and English Lit by writing books of Biblical poetry. His latest release, 'Swimming in Moses' Well' includes many inspirational and powerful poems that link Israel's ancient history with our modern life. Family, faith and future are all themes he grapples with, and we can all connect on some level with his insights, magnificently expressed in both free and formal verse. Judaism is the Mother Religion, sayeth the Dalai Lama?
Segment 1
An independent Jewish State; for all the reasons in the world.
"Why Be Jewish?" is a delightful, rather eclectic book by bestselling author Doron Kornbluth. Kornbluth, who travels the globe inspiring all kinds of audiences about their Jewish identity, draws on sources as disparate as John Lennon, the Dalai Lama and Martin Luther King to make his point about the relevance of Judaism. Stay Jewish, for all the reasons in the world. Or just one, that's fine too. www.mosaicpress.com
Segment 2
KayamaMoms was created to provide tools and support to Jewish women who are reaching the eve of their fertility and are considering becoming single moms, as well as to women who are already single mothers. Their board of advisors, which includes doctors, social workers and rabbis, provides women with the knowledge and support they need to adopt or give birth to a baby and integrate into Jewish communities in Israel and around the world. Yael Ukeles, one of the organization's founders and mother to 9 month old Amitai, joins Eve for a very personal talk on a very sensitive topic, the day after the opening event attracted a full house in Jerusalem. Not easy choices and a lot for us all to learn on many levels. www.kayamamoms.org
Gavriel Rosenberg travelled a long way to arrive at today's graduation ceremony of his basic training stint in the IDF. The US Navy, family tragedies and a sense of destiny brought him to his new home in Israel and the challenges he clearly relishes. The untimely death of Rav Chanan Porat
Hour 1
The untimely death of Rav Chanan Porat is a loss to his immediate family and to his extended family of Am Yisrael. The former MK, lifelong teacher, guide and kibbutznik did not seek glory, he saw opportunity and shaped the future thru his unshakeable faith, love of the Jewish people, the Torah and the Land of Israel. He was laid to rest today in Kfar Etzion. Eve and the tens of thousands of other residents of the communities of Gush Etzion owe him a debt of gratitude. The Children have Returned to their Borders, and he was one of those who led us home. Thank you, with all our hearts, and may his memory be for a blessing, as his life was.
'In the Wake of the Surge' is the new release by Michael Totten, blogger, journalist and political analyst. It's based on his dispatches from Iraq while covering the American led Surge against the Insurgents and like his first book, 'The Road to Fatima Gate' helps us understand the tensions, loyalties, nuances and mindsets of an Arab Middle Eastern country. He speaks with Eve of his impressions of the Kurds, General Petraeus, what its like to live in a war zone, and where he's headed next. www.amazon.com
Hour 2
Yossi Klein Halevi could be called a member of Israel's 'compassionate center". A dove at heart but a hawk by necessity, the brilliant author and journalist offers his thoughts on the UN vote, the Netanyahu government, and the wrenching process that Israel's Jews -on all sides of the spectrum- have undergone in the last 2 decades. We're being told to relinquish parts of our homeland; even if one thinks it's an expedient and correct political choice, it should cause us enormous pain. Now, however, there is no partner even for those who believed in the peace process, so that anguish is being delayed and replaced by the grief a reality of life on war footing. As always, an insightful and deep interview with a man for whom Eve has tremendous respect, even when they disagree.

The Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress is in New York for the UN meetings this week. Dan Diker was way ahead of the curve when he published- along with Pinchas Inbari- the scoop that the PA was going unilateral a la the Kosovo Strategy way back in 2008. It's not the settlement issue or anything else other than bad policy choices and willful blindness that led to this week's debacle at the UN. We do have friends in Europe and Canada who are fighting the moral fight with us, but it's astonishing how a terror entity has the whole world dancing to its tune. Whether the majority of the world is pro-Pal or anti-Israel (not mutually exclusive....) is a question, but a Pandora' Box has been opened and the UN will never be the same. Yossi Klein Halevi & Dan Diker on This Week's Momentous Events
Hour 1
A behind the scenes look at last week's New York's 9th District race between Turner and Weiprin. Political strategist Ruth Jaffe Leiberman worked the campaign for the Republicans and gives us a glimpse of the political machines and machinations. Do American Jews living in Israel have the right and even obligation to participate in US elections? Why was this seat deemed so important on both sides of the aisle?
The right of the Jews to a state of their own shouldn't be a topic for discussion 64 years after the UN vote, but it is, and is even the subject of a book just released jointly by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and World Jewish Congress. Eve was at the conference this week and relates some of the highlights.
Hour 2
Rabbi Nathan Laufer, educator, author and lecturer on Jewish identity and leadership, has an explanation for why we do - or don't do- and say certain things on Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Our customs reflect a commemoration of events that occurred in the past and attempts to 'fix' the mistakes and sins that as a nation did not bode well for our future. To say the least. So by not eating on Yom Kippur we avoid the gluttony and immorality that led to the Sin of the Golden Calf; we
bless the 4 species on Sukkot to show Hashem that we do appreciate the bounty of Israel and thus try to make up for the Sin of the Spies. Etc. A very pertinent and thought provoking message for all of us in the midst of the High Holy Days.

Jewish values for kids and adults, in word, law and therapy
Segment 1
What do a Phd in Islamic History, a children's book on a Confederate soldier's Pesach seder with a Yankee family and "One Little Chicken' have in common? Elka Weber, of course. This charming, intelligent and thoughtful woman has written her second book for kids, this one on Jewish values. The message comes via a delightful story involving the first century Galilean Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, a stray chicken and the lengths his family goes to in order not to benefit from something that doesn't belong to them. Her books are distributed by PJ Library which, in partnership with local communities, provides families with high-quality children's books, music, and other resources that foster Jewish learning and create a gateway for deeper engagement in Jewish life. And for the rest of us available at major retailers.

Law professor Avi Bell made the headlines when he debated Richard Goldstone 4 days before his (partial) recanting of the infamous Report and perhaps pushed the latter in the right direction. Eve speaks with him today about the inabiity of the Israeli government to keep Beduin from stealing land in the Negev and the proposed solutions to this impossible situation. There's dry law, however, and then there's reality, and perhaps a mix of carrot and stick is needed to even semi-solve the time bomb that years of willful blindness has created.
Segment 2
'Genesis at the Crossroads' has worked at peace-building through art and education over the last 11 years. Founder and executive director Wendy Sternberg, MD from Chicago arrived in Israel this week and spoke with Eve about her overwhelming desire to break barriers thru art and music. A series of cross-cultural performances, master classes with various artists- such as Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame-are scheduled and they're bringing their humanitarian instrument donation program to youth in Bedouin communities, a special passion of hers. Wendy is putting together an ensemble of Arab and Jewish Israeli youth
to cross-culturally work and create together. Members of the general public and media are invited to a series of performances in Beer Sheva (AHD Math-Sciences Academy) Sept. 15 at 7p.m.); Sept. 17 at 8p.m.) and Jerusalem International YMCA , Sept. 18 at 7p.m.); Tel Aviv-Yafo (Arab-Jewish Community Center of Yafo), Sept. 21 at 7p.m.) One can only admire her commitment and hope that the sound of music will tune out the cacophony of hate.
Logotherapist Batya Yaniger believes in healing through meaning. She explains to Eve what this therapy is, how it's universal and Jewish, and how one can better their lives no matter where they live. Hear the fascinating story of its creator, Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl.

The Jerusalem Post's Editor in Chief takes the mic
Segment 1
Michael Even-Aish is an educator and Tour Guide par excellence with tremendous knowledge of, and love for, the Land, the Torah, the people of Israel... and an unusual side thing going on with snakes. Turns out that the Palestinian viper- the slithery version- is deadly but easy to avoid if you follow some basic rules. Living as he does on the Golan Heights also provides him with many opportunities to take people to Gamla, the site of a major battle in the year 0067 in a failed attempt to save Jerusalem and the Second Temple from destruction. He shares insights gleaned from familiarity with the place and its historical record.
Is Israel's economy doing well or do the demonstrations of the summer tell another story? Business mentor and advisor Michael Horesh speaks with Eve about the strengths and weaknesses of the country; the land issues, the taxes, the security needs, the energy resources and the potential to make it all work.
Segment 2
The Jerusalem Post doesn't just report the news, sometimes it IS the news. Steve Linde eloquently defends some decisions, regrets others, and in general gives a fascinating insight as to the tremendous challenges he faces as Editor in Chief of the premier source of news about Israel and the Jewish world. Should We Return to Gaza? Three Experts Answer
Segment 1
When does the "right to free speech" become a justification for inciting to murder? Is it possible for any PR machine to better Israel's image when so many lies are bandied about?
Segment 2
Gil Troy is Professor of American History at McGill University in Montreal. His weekly columns are thought provoking and open the debate- whatever it is- in exciting and exploratory directions. John F. Kennedy, among other famous personages, was pro-Israel and ant-terror, as is Troy; when did that become non PC and an impediment to furthering an academic career? And perhaps more importantly, why?
Segment 3
Martin Sherman is upset because he's been proven right. His warningsabout Oslo, Gaza, Sinai, etc. have fallen on deaf ears and he's afraid that we shall pay a heavy price for these mistakes. Why do Israeligovernments fail at doing the people's bidding? What force is reshaping our 'democracy'? Why hasn't UNRWA been disbanded? What the heck is going on?

Harold Rhodes was the Islamic expert and advisor to the Secretary of Defense for many years till his recent retirement. New Old Pictures of the Holy Land from the 19th century

Segment 2
Lenny Ben David is busy with buried treasure of the photographic kind. 22,000 pictures of the Holy Land taken by American Christians from the late 19th century thru the 1940's have been digitized by the Library of Congress. When were they shot, what do they show, what's the context of these photos, who's in them, so many questions, so much work to be done. Many and maybe most were completely unknown till now. One thing is for sure- Jewish life in the Land of Israel was very intense and full, decades and even centuries before the establishment of the modern State. hour 1 Jordan, City of David & the Temple Mount; Eve was there
The 'other side of the Jordan' is mentioned many times in the Tanach, and last week Eve took a 4 day trip to see where the Nation Of Israel, led by Moshe Rabeinu, sojourned on their way to the Promised Land. It was incredible, emotional, fascinating.... and wonderful to come home to Israel. She was then one of the first people in City of David's newly opened drainage tunnel, and topped all that with a tour of the Temple Mount. It's been an intense month of Av/August, to say the least.

hour 1 Landes and Moses, Millennialism and Mourning
Professor Richard Landes is a historian and world expert on millennial and apocalyptic movements, as he describes in his book 'Heaven on Earth: The Varieties of the Millennial Experience'. Oxford: Oxford University Press. He speaks with Eve from Germany, where he is a visiting scholar. Why is the main stream press ignoring all the signs of apocalyptic fever, and what can be done to wake people up from a self imposed stupor before it's too late? To paraphrase what has been said many times before, if we don't learn from history it will not be pretty. As to Breivik, the Norwegian murderer, the danger lies in becoming what you fear the most. www.seconddraft.org
hour 2 Landes and Moses, Millennialism and Mourning
In March, 2008, a terrorist murdered 8 young men at Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav in Jerusalem. Dr. Naftali Moses, whose 16 year old son Avraham David was among the victims, has tried to cope with his grief by writing and speaking. His book, just about to be released, is called Mourning Under Glass. How does one mourn but not let it overwhelm? Can one keep the faith when there are no explanations that fit, no comfort on any level? A highly intelligent and believing man, a heartbroken father, a poignant interview. www.tragic-death.com

hour 1 Anita, Carl and Emmanuel
The connection between the 17th of Tammuz and the destruction of Gush Katif resonates. Eve took a group to visit the refugees yesterday to see how they are 6 years hence, and were privileged to speak with Anita Tucker, who joins her today on the show. Leadership makes such a difference, on any level.
The blog world is probably the best way to bypass the mainstream media and their so called political correctness (read: anti-Israel bias). Carl in Jerusalem posts an average of 20 times a day on his award winning blog Israel Matzav, and it was an effort to take a break for this interview. Thank G-d for Shabbat. But really.

Tel Aviv University Professor Emmanuel Navon teaches political science in a bastion of left wing politics. His book, From Israel with Hope, advises focusing on the positive things we do here, and not on the unsolvable conflict with the Arabs. The ideas he would like to implement- if he succeeds in getting into the Knesset- include renewable energy, land reforms and the use of biofuels. So much hinges on electoral reform, though, which is needs to happen to allow the Prime Minister, whomever he or she might be, the latitude to get things done without kowtowing to small parties and sectarian needs. How refreshing to see someone want to join the fray for the right reasons.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper is the associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and has, in that capacity for over 30 years, overseen the Center’s international social action agenda ranging from worldwide anti-Semitism and extremist groups, to Nazi crimes, to interfaith relations and the struggle to thwart the anti-Israel Divestment campaign, to worldwide promotion of tolerance education. Rabbi Cooper regularly meets with world leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI, presidents and foreign ministers to defend the rights of the Jewish people, combat terrorism and promote intergroup relations. He is widely recognized as a pioneer and international authority on issues related to digital hate and the Internet. He fills Eve in on the challenges facing all of us and the need to keep awareness high. In this rapid communication age no one can say they 'didn't know'. Check out the Kairos Document for starters.

Professor Moshe Koppel of Bar Ilan University headed a team that developed a software program as part of a sub-field of artificial intelligence studies known as authorship attribution. The paper was presented last week in Portland, Oregon, at the annual conference of the Association for Computational Linguistics, but it's okay if you missed it. The responses generated by its application to the Bible have far exceeded anything the researchers anticipated, and the inevitable "conclusions' were fast in coming. Maybe he should have stuck to his less controversial work just reforming the political system and getting a constitution passed in the Knesset. Not your typical computer nerd by a long shot. moishk@gmail.com, hukaeitankoppel.blogspot.com

hour 1 Knights, King and Knowledge
Prague is a medieval city with a rich Jewish past. An unbelievably interesting, thought provoking, anger inducing, depressing, exhilarating and at times overwhelming 4 day visit to the Czech Republic was how Eve and her husband celebrated their 30th anniversary this week. A thousand years of Jewish life, fraught with hardships, blood libels and pogroms but also some high points, the Maharal, Kafka, always tied to the whims of the ruler...and the Church...ending with the Holocaust. Prague synagogues were spared by the Nazis since they were to be the site of the Museum of the Extinct Race. Coming home to Israel was very, very sweet.
Arieh King is a former IDF Navy commando who is fighting on land these days- or more specifically- OVER land. Appalled that land in Jerusalem and all over the country is being sold to Arabs he formed the Israel Land Fund to do what can be done to keep our hard won territory from falling to the enemy, silently but just as deadly. The government and other agencies who were formed to protect the Jewish claim to the Land of Israel are guilty of negligence, at best. Shocking, but there is still time to do something about it. He can't, and shouldn't, do this alone. www.israellandfund.com. 972-2-622-3195.
hour 2 Knights, King and Knowledge
'Baseless Hatred' is a new book by Rene Levy, Professor Emeritus of Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle . It is a fascinating look at what the sages called 'Sin'at Chinam' and gave as the reason the Second Temple was destroyed. The emotion of hatred physically prevents the brain from producing empathic responses and so destroys what he calls 'arevut', the mutual compassion and caring so critical for the Jewish nation. 'Baseless Hatred' examines many aspects of the subject and offers concrete solutions to the problem. Book available everywhere.
Treason is Israel is not dealt with as it is in other countries. Steve Plaut once again is right on target.

Debora Masel's story of her struggle with cancer should be a heartbreaking, depressing one. Yet her book, Soul to Soul, is ultimately an uplifting book, offering a look into a journey of faith and conquering fear that is as inspiring as it is beautifully written. Speaking to Eve from her Melbourne home after a new round of chemo as her body battles yet another metastisis, Debora shares her thoughts and spiritual connection to the Warsaw Ghetto Rabbi Shapira, who penned Esh Kodesh as he grappled with the Germans and the Shoah that murdered his family, and eventually him. hour 1 Talented Expressions of Faith
Eve's peeves and the week that was - cottage cheese, levirate marriage and everything in between.
Dr. Mike Evans is in Israel to launch his new book, The Protocols. His prolific work as a journalist, author and TV personality have taken him all over the globe, but this is his 73rd trip to Israel and his passion is clearly for the Holy Land and its people. One of the initiators- with Menachem Begin z "l- of the Jewish and Christian Zionist alliance that has gained steam in the last decades, he believes that those who bless us will be blessed, and those who don't, well, it's not good news. Would that it were so easily understood by the masses.
hour 2 Talented Expressions of Faith
The Maaleh Film School is giving opportunity for artistic expression to Israelis raised in religious homes. Shoshi Greenfield has written, produced and directed a number of high quality films that touch, with sensitivity and humor, upon issues that lie at the core of the intersection of Judaism and Zionism in contemporary Israel. Now, two of her films, ‘The Rebellious Son’ and ‘Evacuation’ (Pinui) are available for viewing on the web in Hebrew with English subtitles, for only a small fee. She's quite a live wire, and we can expect great things from this dynamic young woman. Be in touch directly with your feedback; shoshigri@gmail.com.

Attorney Marc Zell is in DC, explaining to some US higher-ups why the policy their own government follows breaks their own US law. Why are Judea and Samaria based Jews prevented from benefitting from US programs and business that Arabs in the same areas enjoy? This boycott is 40 years long, run by the US government with tacit
permission from their Israeli counterparts, and Marc is doing something about it.

'Kosher Elegance' is the name of the new cookbook by Israeli mother of 6, acclaimed culinary expert Efrat Libfroind. Each recipe has an accompanying picture that should intimidate all but the most accomplished chefs, but the accompanying text makes it doable even for the 'microwave a frozen pizza' set. No compromises, delicious food and incredible presentation. Kosher has finally arrived, beyond answering to the Higher Authority, of course. Feldheim Publishers, wherever books are sold.
The Melavim Senior Center opening in Efrat is being run by Berny Schwartz. hour 1 Methodist Methodology
Chana Shapiro Stillman is appalled at what she discovered while doing research for the JCPA. Some UK church authorities, significantly the Methodists, are substituting a political agenda for Christianity. They have disavowed the Bible because it's too "Jewish " and associate with anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups under the guise of religion. While so many Christians are developing ties, deepening relationships and broadening understanding with Jews, others are heading in the opposite direction. Haven't we been here and done that - and witnessed the horrific results? Get the sources directly from her and see for yourselves chanah.jcpa@gmail.com

hour 1 Torah based Psychotherapy and the Moskowitz Prize
Reflections on the week that was....
Therapist Dr. Naftali Fish integrates Torah values and psychology in order to promote growth and healing in addicts of all types. Internet addiction is a new affliction in our modern world, no less devastating than 'traditional' ones. His Nachas Ruach treatment model is outlined in the just published book of the same name. For professionals and laymen alike. Write to him at nachatruach@walla.com or get his book at all the major vendors.
hour 2 Torah based Psychotherapy and the Moskowitz Prize
The Moskowitz Prize for Zionism is being awarded at the end of May in City of David. Shaul Goldstein, mayor of Gush Etzion, joins Eve to speak of his long time mentor and teacher, Rav Chanan Porat, one of the winners, who was one of the key people involved in resettling Judea and Samaria after the liberation in 1967. He was also a Member of Knesset and although now quite ill, is still involved daily with bettering Israeli society and education projects.
Ruth Jaffe Leiberman of Jaffe Strategies, project coordinator of the Prize, tells about the other winners; Mossad head Meir Dagan- whose penchant for discretion is still apparent in his minimal interviews, and Rabbi Josh Fass, a founder of Nefesh B'Nefesh. His organization has facilitated the aliya of thousands to Israel and become a key player in the ongoing return of the Exiles to their Homeland. All Israelis, all very deserving of the prize to be given on Jerusalem Day in the Holy City, natch. Reserve a seat or tune in on the net.

hour 1 Fate and Faith. Dr. Yitz Glick and Arnold Roth
American immigrant Dr. Yitz Glick was the last Israeli to leave Sultan Yakub. That Lebanese battle took the lives of some of his closest friends and left the fate of others still undetermined, nearly 30 years later. His wartime experience strengthened his faith and connection to Israel, and led to his decision to be a physician and spend his life saving the lives of others. Dr. Glick's specialization in emergency medicine was facilitated by Dr. David Appelbaum, himself a pioneer in Israeli Emergency Medicine. So when a terrorist blew up Jerusalem's Cafe Hillel in September 2003, it was Yitz who arrived on the scene, and Yitz who identified the bodies of David and his daughter, Nava, on the eve of her wedding. Some people make a difference, and others change their world
hour 2 Fate and Faith. Dr. Yitz Glick and Arnold Roth
Aussie Arnold and New York born Frimet Roth wanted nothing more than to raise their 7 children in Israel. The terror bombing of Sbarro's restaurant in August 2001 murdered their 15 year old daughter Malki and many others, among over 1,500 killed and many thousands wounded in the Oslo Terror War that ushered in Israel's 21st century. What have they done in the decade since then to honor her memory and continue her way? Where are we all in the understanding of terror and its victims and their never-ending pain? For more information on Malki Roth visit http://www.kerenmalki.org.
In a post bin Laden world we still have much to do to eradicate evil. This week, between Holocaust Remembrance Day, Memorial Day for Soldiers and Victims of Terror, and Independence Day, Israelis are well aware of that evil, it's incessant attacks, the price we continue to pay and the appreciation for the means and necessity to defend ourselves. We choose life, as the Torah commands, and perhaps that is the best revenge of all. Perhaps.

hour 1 Holy Rollers, Holy Cacow, the Jewish Al Jazeera & more
The Zionist Organization of America has for many years worked tirelessly to promote Israel’s case in virtually every forum. Detroit, Michigan has one of the largest Moslem and Arab populations outside the Middle East and Africa. Eve speaks to Koby Erez, the Israeli born head of the Detriot branch of the ZOA, on the challenges to free speech that face him, Israel and America.
‘Holy Cacow’ (Hebrew for cocoa) is the label on the high end chocolate being produced in Pnai Hever, in the Southern Hevron Hills. Joe Zander, one of 2 expat Americans whose business it is, tells his story and how he got what for many is the dream job. From harvesting their own Peruvian cocoa beans and on to production in the Land of the 7 Species it’s tough work. But the benefits are worth it.
hour 2 Holy Rollers, Holy Cacow, the Jewish Al Jazeera & more
Roman Spektor is head of PR and media for the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. In a conversation from Moscow he speaks with Eve of the leading role that Russian Jewish organizations are taking in the Diaspora and of the special connection with Israel via the million plus Israelis who made aliya from the former Soviet Union. Alexander Mashkevich, President of EAJC, announced a few days ago his intention to facilitate the launch of an Al Jazeera type channel for Israel’s side of the story. True partners and friends like these are hard to find.

hour 1 British Colonel Richard Kemp & Lebanon author Michael Totten
Michael J. Totten is an independent foreign correspondent and foreign-policy analyst, and author of the newly released "The Road to Fatima Gate: The Beirut Spring, the Rise of Hezbollah and the Iranian War Against Israel. " This fast paced and eminently readable book succeeds at shedding light on the myriad different factions in Lebanon, who is aligned with whom (for today....) and most importantly, why. Totten, an American who clearly cares deeply about Lebanon, shares with Eve his personal experiences and thoughts on the region, its players and what the future may bring. A must read for anyone interested in Israel and her neighbors.
hour 2 British Colonel Richard Kemp & Lebanon author Michael Totten
After Operation Cast Lead, when Goldstone et al were aligned against Israel and the way the IDF conducts itself in war, a nearly lone voice of sanity and support was heard above the demonizing din. British Colonel Richard Kemp, veteran of many Mid East campaigns and no stranger to the battlefield made the case for Israel in any forum he could. Never in the history of the world has an army's moral code and actions been as high as that of the Israeli Defense Forces, he repeated time and again. In the wake of this week's semi-retraction/reassessment of the infamous Report, the Colonel graciously spoke with Eve on the challenges we face, the price he paid for his uncompromising stand and why his faith in us was not misplaced. Would that the world was made up of Colonel Kemps.

hour 1 Kabbala, Castel and Cooking
Akko's Jewish roots and other thoughts as Eve is back and sharing some of what has kept her busy for the last few weeks. Kabbalistic art draws on many sources; David Friedman of Tzfat explains the essence of the Hebrew primary letters, colors and shapes that infuse his art- and life- with tremendous mystical meaning. And the music of the 1960's plays a role as well.... www.kosmic-kabbalah.com

Moshe Castel, who passed away 20 years ago, was one of the first internationally recognized Israeli artists. The Moshe Castel Museum in Maale Adumim, the large Jewish city east of Jerusalem, is a gem. The building and the art work inside are a must-see for anyone who appreciates beauty. Oren Migdal, the ex-curator, relates the history of the genius and the vision that went into this project. Paintings made from Golan basalt stone and brilliant red and green hues literally take your breath away. Stop in, you won't be sorry.

Persian Food from the non-Persian Bride' is the new cookbook by Reyna Simnegar. The woman is as delightful as her recipes are delicious. Daughter of Israeli Diplomat Now Lone Soldier in IDF
Mike Huckabee is in Israel and Eve was the guide on his February 1st bus tour to the Shomron organized by the Yesha Council. She shares some of her impressions of the day and on the friendship, respect and understanding that the former governor- and perhaps future president - has for Israel and the Jewish people's right to live anywhere in the Promised Land.
The IDF has a lone soldier with a very interesting background. Tamar Goren spent her childhood in Argentina, the pampered, sheltered daughter of an Israeli (embassy affiliated) father and Argentinian mother. Her pacifist leanings took a turn into realism when they moved back to Israel when she was 15. Newly understanding that the IDF is about defending the Jews, Tamar elected to go in as a lone soldier, since her father is now ambassador to Uruguay. In her capacity as a teacher of marksmanship, she is able to emphasize the Purity of Arms doctrine that makes Israel's army unique. It's lonely without her family, but this articulate and passionate Zionist would make any parent proud, near or far.

Daughter of Israeli Diplomat Now Lone Soldier in IDF
Maale Gilboa's yeshiva has a well deserved reputation for encouraging its students to think out of the box, to question, and to do full army service while learning Torah and preparing in all ways for adulthood as Jewish man. Rabbi David Bigman has taught there for 18 years, and has recently published commentary on the Torah portions that are based on his Shabbat Chassidic type talks. 'The Fire and the Cloud' from Gefen Publishing House will give you powerful and creative insights into the Torah, and perhaps ultimately, into yourself.

Ben Reuven is a musical activist against injustice of any kind. His original songs on Righteous Gentile Raoul Wallenberg and kidnapped soldier Gilad Schalit literally give voice to his concern that they not be forgotten. His song for Africa has just been released as well. Look him up on youtube.com

Let's Huff and Puff and Blow their Blog Down
Jonathan Spyer is back with more insights on the changes in Israeli society and cogent comments on the somewhat predictable events unfolding in Lebanon. While fundamentalist regimes such as Iran's spout ideology and are quite serious about global jihad, their leaders have no compunction with amassing great wealth and maintaining corrupt policies to ensure their own high flying lifestyles. Much of this is elaborated upon in his recent book 'Transforming Fire' available on amazon.

An Italian Renaissance; Choosing Life in Canada' is a wonderful book by Eli Rubinstein, the son of Holocaust survivors. He joins Eve to tell a bit about this memoir which resonates with the love and respect he has for the courage and resilience of his parents. They survived the war, brought him into the world in Italy, and then moved to Canada where they began a new life and became important members of the community. So many stories yet to be told, so much hope and life as the antidote to despair and death. Urim Publications.

World War II ripped so many families asunder that many of those who survived lost track of other relatives who also survived. Marilyn Adler grew up with no cousins and hardly any extended family. Her parents were each one of the very few survivors of large Hungarian families, the vast majority of whom were murdered by the Nazis. As her parents and their contemporaries age and their memories of people and places long gone fade with them there is a race to find missing links before its too late. She explains how the internet and newer methods of communication are aiding her and her sisters' search for family members and helped her discover that she's descended from a great rabbi. Wright and Wrong
Being right and being smart are not always the same thing; perhaps in a charged environment such as the one Israel is in the latter should take precedence over the former? Join Eve's peeves for some of the current events that may have been handled differently. Truths Desired by God is the new book by Dr. Meir Tamari on the weekly haftorah. His career as an economist and his religious beliefs in the necessity for morality in all spheres including business have made him a renowned expert in business ethics. The prophets gave us the tools for translating the Torah into daily behavior and thus should be appreciated and studied. Israel did not come out of the global crisis better than most because of cleverness, but rather due to the inherent Jewish idea of equality and compassion that kept the materialistic trend somewhat reined in. Wright and Wrong
Dr. Jacob Wright is assistant professor of Hebrew Bible in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta and Director of Graduate Studies in the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies. At Emory, he teaches courses on biblical interpretation, the history and archaeology of ancient Israel, and Northwest Semitic languages. He is the author of Rebuilding Identity: The Nehemiah Memoir and Its Earliest Readers, which won a Sir John Templeton Award (the largest prize for first books in religion). In addition to responsibilities in the excavations at Ramat Rachel (located outside Jerusalem), he is currently writing a book for Oxford University Press that examines the relationship between war, memory and national identity in ancient Israelite society. He spoke with Eve from Paris, where he is lecturing and receiving another distinguished award. His thesis is that, thanks to the Biblical authors and figures like Ezra and Nehemiah, the defeat of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah ultimately fostered a more resilient and enduring national identity that was able to sustain the loss of territorial sovereignty. The Bible presents procreation and education as the ultimate strategies of Jewish survival. Listen to the interview to understand this tremendous, brilliant Bible scholar and his unique contributions to Jewish thought.

Beginnings, Burnings and Begin
Working women in the Shomron have different professional needs than most Israeli wives and mothers. Their larger than average families and greater distance from major work centers entail creative thinking on how to find employment and fulfilling careers while adding to the home coffers. Many prefer to start their own businesses and be their own bosses but need the practical training to do so. Ariel resident and communications expert Linda Marshall in cooperation with MATI, the small business support service, are sponsoring the first of a few conferences aimed at filling that niche and empowering this community. University of Haifa professor Steve Plaut constantly tries to 'put out fires' from his position in Israeli academia. A real and devastating conflagration destroyed swathes of his beloved Carmel earlier this month - enabling him to meet a Hebrew speaking Bulgarian firefighter and do his part to save the forest - but his main efforts go to extinguishing the anti-Zionist diatribe that smolders every day on the Israeli university campuses. Beginnings, Burnings and Begin
Over 30 years ago Menachem Begin and Anwar el-Sadat signed a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt despite, not because of, the involvement of Jimmy Carter. A new book issued by Gefen Publishing House reveals the personal correspondence of these 2 leaders for the first time. Yisrael Medad, who edited the letters along with the late Harry Hurwitz, speaks with Eve about the book, Begin, and his own political involvement at the time (as someone opposed to the deal). How did Begin and Sadat's ideologies, personal histories, sense of patriotism, religious leanings and world outlook affect the outcome of the negotiations? Has hindsight changed our perspective on the monumental events that set tremendous precedents - for good and for bad?

Three Talented Transplants
Is a lack of integrity in our leaders worse than stupidity? And does anyone have a plan?
Sara HaLevi is the producer of 'Fat Pig', now playing in Jerusalem. It's a play meant to discomfit, bringing up the issue of body image and rarely met societal expectations. Her theater company, Way Off Productions, has already made its mark with other plays on topics that make audiences squirm, but later leads to the dialogue that ultimately proves not just interesting, but even therapeutic. Sara's background of extensive work with at-risk teens was the impetus for her foray into theater and tackling subjects that too often are not dealt with, leading to sometimes disastrous real life situations. The play will run until the Broadway version begins so get your tickets now.

Three Talented Transplants
Bad guy redux, and lovin' it. Sisera, the general who loses the battle- and his life- to the Israelites in the book of Judges story of Devorah the Prophetess, is played -in many senses of the word- by Yael Valier in the current Raise Your Spirits production 'Judge' in Gush Etzion. Yael's eclectic background- Japan, South America, England, Israel- lends itself to her unique interpretation of the role, in which she clearly revels. She co-authored the play and spent much time and thought blending the Rabbinic commentary with modern social commentary. Yael and her husband also have fun and music tracks at their site www.tremendousearth.com. Check it out.
Devorah, we ain't in Illinois anymore. Gayle Berman has taken the long way home. From church choirs to professional opera singer to the lead role in the all female cast of 'Judge'; from the Mid West to the East Coast to the Holy Land; Gayle has "eaten the elephant bit by bit " and found inspiration and faith in Judaism and Israel. This enormously talented woman with an incredible set of pipes is once more setting new goals for herself and her family. The book of this journey is being co-authored with her husband, and plans are afoot for Opera for the Sabbath observant. Stay tuned.

Judge and Jewry
Jonathan Spyer of the GLORIA center has written his first book, 'The Transforming Fire: The Rise of the Israel-Islamist Conflict'. It's a unique combination of the professional analyses that he has been publishing for years in international forums and his very personal reflections as an Israel soldier. Is there room for optimism in the chaos- and do we have the patience to wait out the rise- and fall- of Islamic fundamentalism?
Judge! is the new production of the Raise Your Spirits Theater of Gush Etzion. Joining Eve today are 4 of the many women and girls who made this fantastic, thought provoking musical on the Prophetess Devora from the Book of Judges.
Sharon Katz plays General Sisera's nasty mother, and is the inspiration and drive behind the company's 6 shows which began with Joseph in 2001. The performances were initially intended as a way of coping with non stop terror in the early years, and continued as a way to build the community and support terror victims and the families of fallen soldiers. Sharon is involved with virtually everything that moves and does good for someone in the Gush
The Iron Maiden is a combination of narrator, pagan goddess and rock star. Not based on any (known) Biblical figure, Zahava Englard made the role her own. Author of 'Settling for More' and a new, as yet unpublished book, her portrayal of a vamp who flirts with Sisera but revels in his downfall gives the show a real kick.
A gifted family gave Avital Macales a great start, but her phenomenal talent has her shine on stage. As Yael, the conventional woman of that era, she symbolizes what taking initiative really means, and nails the role, in every sense. This is her third show and one fervently hopes, not her last. Talented religious women can reach heights as never before.
Toby Klein Greenwald is no stranger to directing plays, having spent many years with teens, at risk and not, from Gush Katif and not, and too many projects to name without uploading another page. Her joy and challenge with Judge! was staying true to the Tanach while interpreting the text to bring its relevance to modern days. For more information visit: www.wholefamily.com

Totten and Taragin
Journalist and faithful blogger Michael Totten has spent much time in the Arab world, and a sweltering month in Israel this summer. His impressions of the Middle East- from the perspective of an emotionally uninvolved Christian American- are fascinating and far from what the media feeds the public. His first book will be published within the coming months and he's now gathering material for one on Israel. Biblical studies are often dominated by an academic tilt or a purely theological one. Torah educator Shani Taragin makes the Jewish texts come alive without shying away from the literary angle and the various opinions on sources. Her pre- Yom Kippur insights on the Book of Jonah, read in synagogues on the fast day, are eye opening, thought provoking, and ultimately succeed in strengthening our relationship with a merciful Creator.

Biking, running, camping and other gear can be purchased or rented. Guides, advice, maps and path suggestions for group and individual trips are also available. Chaim has also drawn on his eclectic background to bring kids of varying backgrounds together to foster friendships and relationships thru physical activity. Israel is a country that in so many ways speaks for herself. Eve is enjoying her guiding immensely, thrilled to take part in the experience of her tourists connecting with their roots and heritage, and their dawning realization of how the Land of Israel is such an integral part of their ancient faith. South African born Beryl Ratzer has been in Israel for 45 years, guiding Jews and Christians all around the country. The 2010 revised edition of her excellent book 'A Historical Tour of the Holy Land' is available at stores everywhere and is invaluable for professionals and laymen alike in organizing the tremendous amount of information one must sift through to understand what has happened here throughout the millenia. She deplores the post Oslo situation that precludes both Jews and Christians from freely visiting and studying in situ the Temple Mount, and recalls days when it was open to all regardless of religion. www.gefenpublishing.com

The Best - and the Worst - of Israel
Moshe Saperstein, formerly of Neve Dekalim in Gush Katif, shares some of his thoughts on the just released government report. Not regarding the logistical failures and what bureaucratic red tape has kept the refugees from being properly resettled and compensated, but what the report didn't say. Why the Expulsion happened at all, how the Jewish State could destroy 10,000 Jewish lives, and 25 commmunities. That's what needs be investigated. And won't be- because then no one would let it happen again? Or for other reasons too painful to contemplate......
Rabbi Mois Navon is running the Tekhelet dives this summer off the coast of Dor. The renewal of the ancient ritual of the blue fringe is a perfect juxtaposition of science and religion in the Land of Israel. He also takes that further by exploring the connection between pop art and music and the Torah- can modern artistic expression help us relate to the Biblical stories that are so familiar?

Israel is being attacked at sea and on the airwaves.
